Goodnight Irene Sew Along

My Goodnight Irene top is done!  I debated a little about keeping this project a true "sew along" and doing just a few blocks a month or to keep working and not have -another- UFO/WIP laying around.  Since my mom was here this week, I had plenty of time to spend sewing, so I just kept working and then I was close enough that I said, "you just need to finish this one!"  I'm so glad I did!  This was supposed to be a stashbuster quilt....but pink is probably the color I have the least of.  I did end up buying a Fat 8th pack and a couple 1/4 yard cuts of "hot pink."  Oh well...I'll bust my stash with the next quilt!

I don't think the pink squares "float" as much with the black as I've seen with the lighter backgrouds.  The X's definitely are very prominent...especially in this picture!

I used Kona black...and boy oh boy, it's a lint magnet!  I'll use the lint roller when it's up on the longarm.  :)  I also made a small design mistake...but I was too far along in the assembly to -want- to change it.  I figured no one will really know unless I tell them!  :)  Can you see it?

Can't wait to see how everyone else is doing!  Thanks again, Terry for a fun quilt idea and sew along...can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Happy Quilting!
~Michelle

  1. First of all, your quilt top is stunning! I really do love the pink and black together. I understand about just wanting to get it finished too...nothing wrong with that! And I actually kind of like how your "design mistake" turned out. :0)

  2. Ooo--stunning! Actually, the pink blocks jumped out at me first, and I had to look again when you mentioned the X blocks. I hadn't caught that right away!
Since I don't know what the design was supposed to be, I can't see what you did wrong. Looks good to me!

  5. I love the pink and black! When I am almost done with a quilt, I also get the urge to just go ahead and finish it. In fact, I do not get any housecleaning done when I am in that mode! LOL

  6. I love it! The pinks jumped out at me first also, and then I noticed the x's after you mentioned them. I can't find your mistake, but not sure what I am looking for. I don't like to have a lot of unfinished quilts lying around either. I always want to get them done so I can see what they will look like!

  7. We're always hardest on ourselves, aren't we? But I honestly can't find the "mistake" you mention. I'd actually like it if you'd reveal what it is! My mother always told me that there are no mistakes in a quilt. There are only "humility blocks" put there to remind us that only God is perfect! lol
I agree with the other commentors that this pink design POPPED for me off the black, far more than a quilt with a white background ever has! I seriously love the contrast. I know someone who would simply die to own a quilt just like this, and now I have the inspiration to make it. Thank you!

  8. Terrific, Michelle! It reminds me of my teen years when pink, black, and gray were very popular fashion colors. A word about Kona black -- I used it in a block of the month quilt once and thought the same thing, that it attracted lint. However, I learned when trying to do what you plan, using a lint brush, that it wasn't lint at all. The Kona black fabric was allowing "bearding" of the batting. I almost always use Mountain Mist batting ,which never gave me a problem, but for Kona black perhaps something not as fuzzy would be better. Maybe cotton? Don't know, but good luck! Let me know how it goes, please.

  11. I think it's lovely and agree that the pink does "pop" off the black. It's a truly gorgeous quilt and you must be thrilled to have it completed.

  13. This is very striking! I didn't find the error, but I am really tired, so I only spent about 30 seconds looking for it. LOL I've found Kona black to be annoying with lint, too....and had not even though ahead to the batting bearding through on it. (Obviously, it's on a top of mine that has yet to be quilted.) Good job (as usual) on this one.

  14. Wow! I love your version of Goodnight Irene Michelle. I have had to FORCE myself to stop making blocks so I completely understand how you kept going. Your fabric choices make a beautiful quilt!

  20. Stunning! Your design mistake only makes another design that works well. I just finished my fourth row. I will probably just go ahead and finish mine ahead of time, too. I love the pink and black combo.
